Skin cancer

What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and refers to the abnormal growth of skin cells. There are many types of skin cancers. The most commonly encountered are the basal and squamous cell skin cancers; and melanoma.

What causes skin cancer?

Basal cell skin cancer is caused by UV rays from the sun, which damage the DNS inside the skin cells. Squamous cell skin cancer is caused by exposure to UV rays, as well as exposure to certain chemicals.

Melanoma can also be caused exposure to UV rays, but can also be caused other, unknown factors.

There are a number of risk factors that can increase the risk of developing skin cancer.

These factors include a family history of skin cancer, exposure to certain chemicals, exposure to radiation, excessive exposure to UV rays, and a history of severe sunburn. Certain complexions are more prone to developing skin cancer.

How is skin cancer diagnosed?

Dr Pillay will examine your skin for abnormalities. He may also perform a biopsy, in which case a small skin sample is sent to a laboratory for further testing. If you are diagnosed with skin cancer, you might need some additional tests so that the condition can be staged and a treatment plan can be formulated for you. At this point, you will be referred to a specialist for cancer treatment.

What treatments are available?

Skin cancer may require surgery in order to remove cancerous growths. Dr Pillay will use specialised techniques to remove growths and skin lesions in order to reduce the risk of the cancer spreading, and to improve your appearance.

After skin cancer removal, you may feel some pain and tenderness at the site of incision. Dr Pillay will dress your wound and recommend topical medications if necessary. He will also explain how to keep your incision site clean and safe from injury while it heals.

You may need to limit your physical activity until your wound has completely healed.
