Facelift

What is a facelift?

A facelift is a procedure that works by removing and repositioning excess skin and fat from the face to produce a tighter, more youthful appearance. Before you have a facelift, it is important that you have realistic expectations. At your initial consultation, Dr Pillay will address any questions or concerns you have. He will also examine your face and let you know what your options are. In some cases, a facelift can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as a neck lift or eyelid surgery to help balance your features.

Facelifts are generally performed on patients in their 40s to 70s who have some visible signs of ageing. Candidates for facelift surgery should be healthy to reduce the risk of complications.

What does the procedure involve?

During the procedure, Dr Pillay will make incisions along your hairline and behind and in front of your ears so that he is able to access the muscle and tissue under the skin. He will then remove or reposition excess skin and fat, as well as muscle, before stitching the incisions closed and bandaging your face. After the procedure is complete, Dr Pillay will explain how you should care for your dressing.

How long does recovery take?

It is quite normal to experience some bruising and swelling following facelift surgery, which may last up to three weeks. You will see Dr Pillay a few days after your surgery for a follow-up consultation, at which point your bandages will be removed. You will need to come in for follow-up appointments regularly so that Dr Pillay can assess your bruising and swelling, and remove any stitches.

While you recover, you can use ice packs to help relieve swollen skin. Dr Pillay may prescribe pain medication to help you manage any discomfort following surgery, and may also recommend certain ointments and creams to ease bruising.
