Chin Augmentation

What is chin augmentation?

Chin augmentation refers to a procedure in which the appearance of the chin is enhanced with the use of facial implants. The procedure is an effective option for patients who would like to add proportion to the chin, and improve overall facial structure and balance. You might consider chin augmentation surgery if you have a recessed chin; a pointed or square chin; a prominent nose; or a fleshy neck, as the procedure adds definition to the jaw and balances the appearance of a large nose. In many cases, chin augmentation surgery may be combined with rhinoplasty, cheek implants, and lip augmentation.

What does the procedure involve?

In most cases, chin augmentation surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. The duration of the procedure is typically between 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the case.

In the case of a recessive chin, implants are used to supplement existing bone at the front of the jaw. The implant is placed under the skin and helps to enhance the definition of the jaw.

Dr Pillay will make an incision either under the chin or inside the mouth between the gum and lower lip. The chin implants are then inserted through the incisions and carefully positioned in front of the jawbone. Dr Pillay will ensure that the position properly balances the facial features before stitching it in place.

How long does recovery take?

It is quite normal to experience some swelling, stiffness and bruising after the procedure. Once the swelling subsides, you will begin to notice the results of the surgery.

Recovery from chin augmentation takes around ten days, after which you should be able to return to your normal daily activities. Dr Pillay may prescribe pain medication to help relieve any discomfort.
