Liposuction / sculpture

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure that is performed in order to remove fat from the body. The procedure is considered by patients who would like to change their body shape by removing fat deposits in areas such as the thighs, stomach, hips, and buttocks.

What does the procedure involve?

Liposuction is performed under general anaesthetic and generally takes between one and three hours, depending on the size of the area that is being treated. You may need to stay in hospital overnight following the procedure.

Dr Pillay will mark the areas of your body where you would like fat cells to be removed. These areas are then injected with a specially formulated solution containing an anaesthetic. Dr Pillay will use special tools to break up the fat cells with the use of either high-frequency vibrations, a laser pulse, or a high-pressure water jet.

Dr Pillay will make a small incision at the site of treatment, through which a suction tube is inserted. The tube is attached to a vacuum machine, and works to loosen the fat and pull the fat from the body Any excess fluid and blood is drained before the incision is stitched and bandaged closed.

How long does recovery take?

When the procedure is complete, you’ll be fitted with compression bandages, which are helpful in reducing swelling and bruising. You will need to wear these bandages for several weeks after surgery.

Dr Pillay will prescribe you with pain medication to help you deal with any discomfort. In some cases, antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection.

Full recovery typically takes around two weeks, and depending on the size of your treatment area, you may be able to return to work within a few days. It is best to avoid strenuous activity for up to a month after the procedure.
