Abdominal reconstruction

What is abdominal reconstruction?

Abdominal reconstruction may be performed in patients suffering from a hernia, in which case the defect responsible for the hernia will be repaired and reconstructed. The procedure involves a combination of surgical techniques designed to modify the abdominal wall and reduce and repair the hernia.

What does the procedure involve?

Patients with a midline abdominal hernia may benefit from the procedure, in which case the rectus abdominal muscles are released from their side attachments and shifted to the middle. During this procedure, which is known as a components separation, the defect that has caused the hernia is repaired. Surgical mesh is used to secure the muscles and tissues in place and strengthen the repair.

Abdominal reconstruction may also be suitable for patients who have a midline abdominal hernia, and who have excess skin and fat. Excess abdominal tissue can be removed in a procedure known as panniculectomy.

How long does recovery take?

Abdominal reconstruction is a major surgery, and you will need to stay in the hospital for a few days following the procedure. While you recover, you will need to wear an abdominal binder, which will provide support. You may also have drains placed, which will help to remove excess fluid from the body.
