Lower leg reconstruction

What is lower leg reconstruction?

Lower leg reconstruction may be recommended in cases where patients suffer from defects in the foot, ankle, and lower leg. These defects may be caused by a number of factors, including diabetes, trauma, complications from previous surgery, and other conditions affecting the blood flow in the legs.

What does the procedure involve?

The purpose of the surgery is to repair a defect and to prevent recurrence. In the case of trauma, lower leg reconstruction may involve one of a number of techniques, depending on the case. These techniques may include a simple closure, skin grafting, and tissue transfer. The type of procedure that Dr Pillay chooses to perform will depend on the size and location of the injury, as well as the overall health of the patient.

In the case of an underlying medical condition, treatment will depend on the severity of the condition. The condition will generally need to be managed before reconstructive surgery can be performed.

How long does recovery take?

Full recovery may take a few months, depending on the type of procedure you require. Dr Pillay will advise you of how best to aid recovery, and may prescribe medication to help relieve pain and discomfort.

In most cases, physical therapy is recommended to help restore strength, flexibility and movement in the legs.
