BREAST AUGMENTATION

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a procedure in which the breasts are made larger with the use of implants. Patients may choose to undergo this type of surgery for reconstructive purposes following a mastectomy for breast cancer, or for cosmetic reasons.

What kind of implants are available?

There are many types of implants available for breast augmentation. They differ in terms of shape, round vs anatomical and saline vs silicone. Saline-filled implants are filled with sterile salt water, which may be filled either before or during the implant procedure. Silicone implants, on the other hand, are filled with medical grade silicone. They tend to offer a more natural feel than saline implants.

What does the procedure involve?

Before undergoing breast augmentation surgery, you will meet with Dr Pillay to discuss your options. If you have any questions or concerns, you can raise them with Dr Pillay, who will be happy to address them for you.

The procedure itself generally takes between one to two hours to complete. It will be performed under general anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain. Dr Pillay will make an incision under your breasts, under your arm, or around the nipples, depending on the type of implant you have chosen. The implant is placed above or below the chest muscle before the incisions are stitched closed.

How long does recovery take?

After the surgery has been completed, Dr Pillay will cover the site of incision with a dressing and, in some cases, a tube may be placed to drain any excess liquid from your body. Dr Pillay may recommend that you wear a specially designed surgical bra, which will help to support your breasts as they heal, and provide some comfort.

It is quite normal to experience some swelling after surgery. This should resolve itself within a few days.

It is advisable that you avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for around six weeks after the procedure. Dr Pillay will prescribe any relevant pain medications to ease any discomfort following surgery.
