Nose Surgery / Rhinoplasty

What is rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is a procedure in which the function and appearance of the nose is improved. The procedure may be performed for medical or cosmetic reasons, or a combination of these.

Before undergoing rhinoplasty, you will meet with Dr Pillay for a consultation in order to discuss your expectations. He will address any questions and concerns you have at this time, and let you know what your options are based on his evaluation of your nose and other facial features.

What does the procedure involve?

During the procedure, Dr Pillay will make incisions inside the nostrils or at the base of your nose, depending on your needs. He will then work to reshape and reposition the inner bone and cartilage. Every rhinoplasty surgery is different, and your specific treatment plan will be customised to suit your expectations and needs.

How long does recovery take?

After the surgery is complete, you will need to rest in bed with your head elevated for some time in order to reduce bleeding and swelling. It is quite normal to experience some congestion at this time. You will have internal dressings inside your nose for up to a week, and you will need to wear a nasal splint for the first week following surgery. The splint is placed in order to protect and support your nose while it heals.

It is quite normal to experience some pain and swelling for up to two weeks. You may see some bruising around the eyes. You may have some minor bleeding and mucus for a few days following surgery, or after your dressing has been removed.

Once the swelling has subsided, you will start the see the results of your procedure. You should avoid strenuous activity and exercise for three to six weeks after the surgery, depending on Dr Pillay’s recommendations. In most cases, you will be able to resume social activities after two or three weeks, by which time there will be no visible signs of the procedure.
