Hand reconstruction including congenital hand defects

What is hand reconstruction surgery?

If your hand is damaged in any way, or you suffer from a defect, surgery may be recommended in order to improve your condition. Surgery can be very helpful in improving function and flexibility, as well as to correct any abnormalities. In many cases, plastic surgery may be performed to repair damages caused by severe trauma.

What does the procedure involve?

You will be given a general anaesthetic before the procedure begins. The procedure itself will depend on the injury or condition you are having treated. One of the most common hand surgeries is tendon repair, in which a retracted tendon is retrieved and reconnected in order to restore function and mobility.

In the case of a birth defect, surgery may involve separating fingers that are joined by a web of skin or a partial fusion of bones. Surgical techniques such as skin grafting may be used, depending on the case.

How long does recovery take?

After surgery, Dr Pillay will let you know how to take care of your hand. He may prescribe medications to help relieve any pain and discomfort, and to reduce the risk of infection.

Some hand therapy exercises may be recommended in order to help restore strength and flexibility. It is important to attend all of your follow-up appointments with Dr Pillay to ensure that your hand heals properly.
