Eyelid Surgery

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery is performed in order to reduce the appearance of sagging eyelids by removing excess skin from the upper eyelids. In most cases, the procedure is performed for cosmetic reasons, although it may be recommended for patients whose vision is impaired as a result of sagging upper eyelids.

The surgery is best suited to patients who are in good health, and is most commonly performed in people over the age of 35 years old. It is important to have realistic expectations, as the procedure will not necessarily change the structure of your face. The surgery, however, is often very effective in enhancing patients’ appearance and can go a long way in boosting self-confidence.

Eyelid surgery is often combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as a forehead lift, filler injections, and laser resurfacing treatments

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure generally takes around two hours to complete if the upper and lower eyelids are being treated. During the procedure, Dr Pillay will cut along the lines of the eyelids, and separate the skin from the underlying tissue. He will then remove the excess fat and skin from the eyelids before stitching the incisions closed.

How long does recovery take?

After the procedure, you will have stitches in your eyelids for around a week. It is quite normal to experience some swelling and bruising following treatment, although this should resolve itself within one or two weeks. You may also have dry eyes for up to two weeks after surgery.

You will need to limit your normal activities for a few days after the surgery while you heal. You can use ice cubes, ice packs, gauze pads, and eye drops to help relieve discomfort. Dr Pillay may prescribe painkillers to manage any pain following surgery.
