Fat Fills

What are fat fills?

Cosmetic fat fills refer to a procedure in which fat is taken from one part of the body (known as the donor site) and purified, before it is injected into another part of the body (known as the target site). Fat fills are an effective means of restoring contours to the cheeks and chin, and adding volume to areas such as the lips.

Fat fills are used to treat facial lines, and the visible signs of ageing, such as frown lines and smile lines, as well as lips that have lost volume, hollows under the eyes and cheekbones, and scars caused as a result of acne. Fat fills can be used on various parts of the face, including the nose, upper lip, jawline, and temples

What does the procedure involve?

During the procedure, your own body fat is used to plump up areas of the body. You will be given a local anaesthetic. First, you will undergo gentle liposuction in an area of the body in which there is excess fat. This may include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or jowls. Once the fat has been removed from your body, it is purified before it is injected into the target area in the face. During the purification process, the fat cells are spun at a very high speed in order to separate the fat cells from the liquid. Only clean, undamaged fat cells are used for the fat transfer.

How long does recovery take?

It is quite normal to experience some swelling and bruising at both the target and donor sites, which should resolve itself within a few days. Dr Pillay may prescribe some pain medication to help you manage any discomfort.

Once the swelling has subsided, you can expect to start seeing the results of your procedure. While the results vary from case to case, you should enjoy the results of your fat fill procedure for years.
