What is labiaplasty / labial reduction?

A labiaplasty, also known as a labial reduction, is a procedure that is performed in order to reduce the size of the labia minora, which are the flaps of skin located on either sides of the vaginal opening.

The procedure may be considered by women who are unhappy with the appearance of their labia. In some cases, the labia may cause some discomfort, in which case the procedure may be a suitable option.

What does the procedure involve?

Before undergoing the surgery, you will meet with Dr Pillay, who will be able to address any questions and concerns you might have. The decision to go ahead with the procedure is very personal, and should be considered carefully.

The procedure itself is performed under general anaesthetic and generally takes one hour to complete. In many cases, patients are able to go home on the same day as the surgery.

During the procedure, Dr Pillay will shorten and reshape the labia. Any excess, unwanted skin is removed with a scalpel, and the edges are stitched closed with dissolvable stitches.

How long does recovery take?

The recovery period will depend on the individual, but it is often possible for patients to go home on the same day as the surgery. Because the skin is very delicate, it can take a month or two to completely heal.

It is quite normal to experience some bruising, tenderness, and swelling for up to two weeks following surgery. Dr Pillay may prescribe some pain medications to help you deal with any discomfort.

While your skin heals, it is very important that you keep the site of surgery clean to reduce the risk of developing an infection. You should avoid sex for several weeks, wear loose underwear to prevent friction and rubbing, and use sanitary towels instead of tampons until you have fully recovered.
