Ear Surgery

What is ear surgery?

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is performed in order to enhance the appearance of asymmetrical, protruding, or drooping ears. The procedure can be performed to reshape one or both ears, and may involve an earlobe reduction, and the removal and recontouring of excess skin and cartilage.

What does the procedure involve?

During ear surgery, Dr Pillay will make an incision behind the ear in order to expose the cartilage. He will then reshape the cartilage and remove any excess skin. If necessary, Dr Pillay will reposition the ear closer to the head before closing the incision with stitches.

In the case of protruding ears, Dr Pillay may perform an ear pinning procedure, which involves positioning the ears more closely to the sides of the head. During the procedure, skin is removed from the back of the ear and the ear is repositioned and reshaped to improve the overall appearance.

Ear surgery may also be performed in order to correct deformities or injuries, including congenital birth defects; burns; lacerations; and infected piercings. During reconstructive ear surgery, Dr Pillay will make use of a combination of surgical techniques to create a natural-looking ear. If necessary, a skin graft can be taken from another part of the body, such as the upper buttock.

How long does recovery take?

Full recovery from ear surgery can take up to six weeks, although you should be able to resume most of your normal daily activities a few days following the procedure. It is quite a normal to experience some swelling and bruising after surgery, and you may feel some itching, temporary numbness, and throbbing at the site of treatment.

Your ears will be bandaged after the surgery, and Dr Pillay will advise you of how long you should keep the dressing in place. It is important that you keep the bandages in place for the recommended time, to ensure that your ears heal properly and retain the desired shape and position.
