What is a dermal filler?

Dermal fillers are an effective treatment for the appearance of facial lines and volume enhancement. They help to restore volume to certain areas of the face.

Dermal fillers are a good option for patients who would like to enhance the volume of thin lips; reduce facial wrinkles, scars and other signs of ageing; and enhance the contours of the face.

There are a number of dermal fillers available. Dr Pillay prefers to use hyaluronic acid fillers of varying density. Each dermal filler has its own benefits for specific parts of the face. Dr Pillay will advise you of the best type for your skin type, areas of concern, and unique expectations.

What does the procedure involve?

First, Dr Pillay will evaluate your skin and advise you on the best treatment plans for your needs. Points of treatment will be marked, cleaned with an antibacterial agent, and anaesthetised with either an ointment or an injection.

Dr Pillay will then inject the dermal fillers into your skin. The treatment may take anywhere between 15 minutes and an hour, depending on the number of areas you would like treated.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery time varies for every patient, depending on the type of filler used. You should avoid strenuous physical activity for 24 to 48 hours after treatment, as this will help to minimise swelling and bruising. You will be able to resume most of your normal activities immediately after treatment.

If you experience some swelling, bruising, redness, or temporary numbness, Dr Pillay may recommend applying ice to the site of treatment.
